Mind-Body Medicine

Mind-body medicine understands that the mind and body are intricately connected. Your thoughts influence your emotional state, triggering a cascade of biochemical events in your body to which your immune system and organs respond. Different emotions trigger alternate biochemical pathways.

For example, do you remember the last time you heard a loud noise and were frightened? You thought, “Danger!” and your body released adrenaline. Your heart began to pound; perhaps you trembled slightly and your mouth became dry. If your perceptions had been different, your body’s response would have been different.

Your beliefs also influence how you make choices about your healthcare providers and the other people you include in your social network. Perhaps they are helpful, perhaps not. If you address your mental, social and spiritual life, you can directly affect your body’s physiology and healing journey. It is powerful medicine.

Mind-Body techniques focus on how a patient’s emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being relate to returning balance to the physical body. Listening to patients is often the foundation of healing, by reducing stress levels and helping them better cope with life's challenges.  Strong mental health and stress management are cornerstones in the process of maximizing longevity.

Dr. Partovi's approach to Mind-Body Medicine includes the use of guided imagery, deep relaxation, reprocessing therapy (EMDR), and emotional freedom technique (EFT) in combination with a targeted nutritional treatment that works to correct a patient’s key biochemical imbalances.  In terms of mental illness, extensive research shows that problems of brain function may be caused by stress, as well as many other biochemical factors that exert profound detrimental effects.  Left uncontrolled, these factors create chronic states of mental and physical illness.

Mental illness is due not only to an undernourished brain, but also to a host of other physical and biochemical interactions. The brain cannot function well if the digestive tract, liver, adrenal, or thyroid is compromised.  There are many biochemical trends that influence mental health; and when basic biochemical pathways are compromised, the whole body is affected.

For patients who have been diagnosed with a mood, perception, thought, or behavior disorder; it is important to know that there are safe nutritional interventions that can complement and sometimes replace standard drug treatment.
